One of the oldest and most treasured types of dessert is a cake. The word itself is actually of Viking origin, coming from the ancient word "kaka".

In ancient Rome, the Greeks used to create a basic type of bread dough. They would then add honey, eggs and butter to the dough which would result in a sweet-tasting cake-like product. In early English times, cakes were basically bread-based. The only real difference between bread and a cake at that time was that cakes were a different shape, and were flipped half way through cooking while bread was left upright all the way through the baking process.

There are so many different types of cakes to choose from and there's a million different ways to make them. To find the kind of cake you want to make can take a long time as the list of ingredients required for each cake recipe is usually quite extensive and you have to be careful not to include any ingredients that may harm those with allergies.

Almost every cake includes a combination of eggs, flour, sugar and either oil or butter. Various other extracts will be added depending on the type of cake you want to make. Cakes are usually baked for ceremonial events like weddings or birthday parties. I can guarantee that you will take part in a big ceremony of some sort at least once every year which is why it's a good idea to learn how to bake a cake, just incase you get asked to do it.

When a cake recipe has been successfully completed, the cake is usually topped off with a form of icing or frosting. This usually contains mainly sugar and perhaps some hundreds and thousands. Sometimes people use marzipan in cakes but this is a rather acquired taste and not everyone can stomach the taste of a cake where a lot of marzipan has been used.
